One Size Does Not Fit All – Making the Case for Two-Tier ERP – Microsoft Dynamics ERP “The Edge” Blog

Over the years, in working with clients implementing ERP systems, I have more than once encountered a situation where the ERP decision was “forced” upon a Division or Business Unit of a company. In those situations it was clear to the team doing the implementation that the system selected was sub-optimal for their particular business model. However, in the broader corporate picture, it made sense from a standardization perspective.

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 – enable opportunity and reduce risk with business agility. – Microsoft Dynamics ERP “The Edge” Blog

The developers for Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 were tasked with re-architecting toward a model that was Powerful, Simple, and Agile. The article below focuses on the agile capabilities of AX 2012, and how these capabilities relate to real-world issues that business face in today’s fast-moving world.

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012: The real Next Practices for Business Intelligence

As I told you in my previous blog, we just returned from Microsoft’s Convergence 2011 in Atlanta, and we were really blown away by what we saw with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, and the direction of Microsoft and the Dynamics product stack. As promised, I want to take you on a deeper dive on some of the areas we found so exciting. The first of these, and what I see as perhaps the most impactful to our clients, is Business Intelligence.

Convergence 2011 Report

I just returned from Convergence 2011 in Atlanta and it was outstanding!! We came away even more excited about the direction Microsoft is going with Dynamics AX 2012 which is scheduled to be released for general availability in August 2011. The theme of the Dynamics team was to make Dynamics AX 2012 Powerful, Simple, and Agile. While these could easily have become buzzwords, what we saw was that the Dynamics development team really took this direction to heart and we were shown many examples of how this approach was incorporated into the product. Mike and I attended a number of the sessions and met with several Microsoft executives as well as some of our key partners and we cannot wait to spread the word about this great new product. I’ll talk here about just a few of the highlights… Later I will go into more depth on each of these as well as other cool new topics. So stay tuned!!

The Secret to Making Manual Sales Set Changes

I have preached about the power of Sales Set functionality at CWG Conferences. One of the best features of Sales Sets is the ability for a user to make ad hoc, manual changes to the configurable sale BOM structure. I saw a post on the CWG Forum tonight where a user made these settings but was still unable to make manual changes to the sales BOM. If your configuration profile is sales set and you have allowed manual changes, you can manually change the sales BOM items BUT unfortunately you must make changes in the Result screen of configuration, not in the sales order itself. I don’t know of any users that find this to be intuitive (but it is what it is). Advanced users can leverage this feature to make design-to-order changes in the sales structure similar to the way that order BOMs allow design-to-order changes in the manufacturing structure. Note that once an item is manually changed or deleted, no automatic updates will be made to that item if the configuration is later changed. Be advised that manual sales set changes can behave in a quirky manner if you are manually changing items that were specialized from a class node.
